As a Kansas City professional photographer, I know one of the most difficult parts of having a photography session is finding what to wear! Whether you have maternity, family-centered newborn, or family photography sessions, I help each of my clients one on one find the perfect outfits for everyone included in their session, including moms! I even have a motherhood client closet for clients to borrow from.
I use these 5 tips as a Kansas City professional photographer to help clients plan their outfits for their photography sessions.
1. Long Flowy Skirt or Dress
Long flowy skirts allow visual interest as you move and comfort as you move around throughout your session without worrying about adjusting. BONUS if it has a slit! Slits help with bringing shape without needing to go shorter in length.
2. No-show bra that accommodates outfit choice
One thing I noticed during the first few years as a Kansas City professional photographer is moms were constantly adjusting their bra- whether it was to pull it down, adjust the shirt not to show, straps adjustment, bra color showing through, etc. Now I such to all my mamas regardless of shirt choice is a neutral color bra OR nipple pasties/ boob tape. I would say about 90% of my clients choose nipple pasties or boob tape, so they don’t have to mess with it.
3. Natural, visually soft fabrics
I love photographing linen, chiffon, or satin fabric the best! It is the 3 types of fabric that my client closet is filled with! It not only demonstrates comfort through the photos but allows light to come through and visual interest as it moves.
4. For those who want to bring focus away from the waste line
As a Kansas City professional photographer, I recommend pregnant mamas or other moms who want to bring the focus away from their waste line to wear off-the-shoulder tops with a style that comes in under your chest. This is not a hard fast rule but wearing things off the shoulder elongates your neck and shoulders while outfit styles come in under the chest shape, especially in 2D such as photos.
5. For pregnant moms
Depending on your comfort level, most of my clients love wearing off-the-shoulder, 2 piece outfits (crop top and skirt) or dresses that open at the belly.
If you prefer a more modest look: I suggest a v-neck with a style that accentuates under our chest long enough to allow shape while also being modest.
