As an overland park family photographer, I have photographed over 1200+ families in my career! While I always customize each of my photos for my clients to create an authentic and memorable session for them, I always have a general guideline for photos I capture with most families. Here are some of the photos I always try to capture from each family session and why!

7 must-have photos for your family photography session in Overland Park

1. Full family photo of your family interacting and loving each other

We all love getting a typical “cheese” photo on Christmas cards and sent out to the family.  But one of the most meaningful photos you can have of your family is all of you soaking up the moment together. Whether that is cuddling up in an open field, scouting out a clifftop, or running around chasing your laughing children, these are the photos that will make you smile for years to come as you remember this loving experience.

2. Mom and kids

As a mom, I know how special sweet moments with our babies are.  Sometimes it can be hard to be in front of the camera, but those photos with you and your kids are the ones not only you but your children will hold on to and look back on frequently as the years pass by as they remember the sweet bond they have with you.

3. Dad and kids

Just like moms, kid’s need photos with dad too! Dads have unique relationships with their kids at each stage, and it is remarkable to capture kids doing all their favorite things with their dads.

4. All the kids

These are some of my favorites for my family pictures. Whether your kids are best friends or fight like cats and dogs, having photos of all of your kids playing together is one that makes your mama’s heart melt.

5. You and your partner

How often do you and your partner get photos to capture your love story? You both have been through thick and thin, good and ugly, but overall you are here… together! Just think about years from now, looking back, and see how far you have come together.

6. Kids Individually

During your lifestyle family session, you will be spending time with your family soaking up all the love, laughter, cuddles, and fun. But I love capturing small little moments of each kid individually as they enjoy the moment with you. They take photos of their sweet little smiles as they look up at you, their adorable dancing or adventurous hearts.

7. Detail shots

I never knew how much my mama’s heart would love all the tiny details of my sweet family. The way my little girl’s hair swishes in the wind as she runs, the way my son’s little hand fits into mine as he holds my hand, and the way my husband hugs our children tight as they laugh. Those small moment detail shots are unique and can capture all those tiny moments that make up your family.
