As a Kansas City Newborn Photographer, I have done 100s of lifestyle baby photoshoots at home for parents across the midwest.

I have gathered a few of my top tips to create the BEST newborn photography session in your home.

What is an in-home lifestyle newborn photography session?

Lifestyle newborn photography is a style geared towards capturing the natural moments of your family together.  It is my favorite and what I specialize in because I believe there is so much power in remembering the small moments.  The way you look down at your baby.  The way your little one holds your finger in restful sleep.

What should I include in my baby photography session at home?

I take a minimalist lifestyle approach to newborn sessions.  If you prefer not to include anything but your loved ones, that is perfectly fine.

Some parents prefer to include a few keepsakes and memories within the photos.  I have gathered a few ideas of what some have decided to include in their session to give a few ideas.

  •  Passed down items such as family blankets, outfits parents or grandparents wore when they were taken home from the hospital, or remaking a similar photo or pose you had as a baby.
  • A rainbow blanket or stuffed rainbow is used as a reminder of a little one lost.
  • Grandparents or other special people in your life that you would like to be part of these photos.
  • Floral crowns for nature-loving parents.
  • A favorite team jersey or souvenir to showcase your family’s favorite team

Who should I include in my baby’s photoshoot?

I think it is so important to include your baby’s loved ones in the photos.  I always include parents and siblings in the photos.  But in some sessions, families have included grandparents and close family friends.

What should my baby wear for their in-home newborn photography session in Kansas City?

I suggest picking 1-2 outfits for your baby to wear during your newborn photography session.  That offers a bit of variety without waking your little one very many times.  My top 2 favorite things for babies are a neutral onesie or sleeper.   It keeps the baby warm and cozy, allowing them to fall asleep easier while still keeping a comfortable lifestyle feel.

It can be so fun to accessorize in bows, wraps, and blankets, so minimalist styling can be perfect without taking away from the moment.

If you have a favorite outfit, you would like your baby to wear. Please include that! There are so many adorable baby outfits.

What should my family and I wear?

I suggest finding coordinating muted colors without busy patterns, oversized logos, or large stripes.

A few things that look great are…

Light, neutral tones always look great together. My favorite is dark green, maroon, mauve, beige, light blue, or cream.

Flowy dresses and linen button-ups are perfect for the dressed-up look; comfortable, comfortable sweaters or blouses and leggings are perfect for a cozy look.

No need to worry about shoes.  Socks or barefoot are perfect.
