Big-Day Things To Do in Springfield MO
Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium
First, start with the big one. It sits right next to Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World on W Sunshine St. The aquarium side has sharks, stingray touch pools, and penguins. The wildlife museum side also walks you through habitats from all over the world. Plan on at least half a day, because my kids always beg to stay longer.
Best for: rainy days and kids of every age.
Dickerson Park Zoo
For starters, our zoo is the perfect size for little legs. You can see the whole thing in two to three hours without anyone melting down. There are hundreds of animals, plus a train ride and giraffe feedings on select days. It sits at 1401 W Norton Rd.
Best for: toddlers and preschoolers.
Fantastic Caverns
Next up, this is America’s only ride-through cave. You stay in a Jeep-drawn tram the whole time, so nobody has to walk and strollers are not an issue. The cave also stays cool all year, which makes it a great summer stop. It is located at 4872 N Farm Rd 125.
Best for: all ages, including babies and grandparents.
Discovery Center of Springfield
Also on the list: three floors of hands-on science on E St Louis St. Kids can dig for dinosaur bones and splash at water tables. They can also test out the building zones. We usually spend about two hours here before little arms get tired.
Best for: curious kids ages 3 to 12.
Free Things To Do in Springfield MO
Springfield Art Museum
Best of all, admission is free, every day. The museum at 1111 E Brookside Dr has a family art lab where kids can make something to take home. It is quiet and calm, so it is a nice reset from louder attractions.
Best for: a free, low-key family outing.
Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden
This garden sits inside the Springfield Botanical Gardens at 2400 S Scenic Ave. It has koi ponds, arched bridges, and a tea house. It is a peaceful walk and one of the prettiest free spots in town. As a Springfield MO family photographer, I also take a lot of my spring family sessions here when the blooms are out.
Best for: a quiet walk and pretty photos.
Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park
This working farm at 3825 W Farm Road 146 lets kids get close to goats, chickens, pigs, and horses. There are hayrides in season and a fishing pond as well. Admission is small and the whole visit feels slow and easy.
Best for: animal-loving little kids.
Springfield Conservation Nature Center
Admission is free at 4600 S Chrisman Ave. Inside there are live animal exhibits and hands-on displays. Outside, easy trails wind through woods and prairie. It is our go-to when we want fresh air without driving far. We also love the indoor exhibits on cold days.
Best for: a free nature morning close to town.
A little bit more adventurous
Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield
About 15 minutes southwest of town in Republic, this Civil War battlefield has a five-mile driving tour plus walking trails. First, watch the visitor center film so the kids get the backstory. Then pack a picnic for the grounds.
Best for: school-age kids and history lovers.
Pythian Castle
Built in 1913 as an orphanage, this castle at 1451 E Pythian St now runs guided history and mystery tours. The stories are spooky but not too scary for brave tweens. Book ahead, because tours sell out on weekends.
Best for: older kids and teens.
1984 Arcade
This downtown arcade at 400 S Jefferson Ave is open Wed through Sat, 4 to 11 pm. One entry fee covers all the video games, and pinball is 50 cents a play. It is loud and dark, so it is exactly what big kids love on a rainy day.

Incredible Pizza Company
Part restaurant and part giant arcade, with go-karts, mini golf, and bowling under one roof. It is a popular birthday party spot for good reason. Try to go on a weekday, since weekends get packed. When I am not photographing cake smashes as a Springfield MO family photographer, I am usually the mom in the corner with a coffee while my kids burn energy.

Parks, Water, and Ballgames
Jordan Valley Park
